Poland Chicken

Appearance

  • Size: Medium breed.

  • Weight:

    • Rooster: ~2.5–3.5 kg (5.5–7.5 lbs)

    • Hen: ~2–3 kg (4.5–6.5 lbs)

  • Body: Upright and slender build.

  • Crest: Large, fluffy crest of feathers covering the head, often obscuring their vision.

  • Comb: V-shaped, small, often hidden under crest.

  • Feather Varieties: Many—golden laced, silver laced, buff laced, white-crested black, white-crested blue, and more.

  • Skin/Leg Color: White skin, slate-blue or gray legs.

🥚 Egg Production

  • Eggs per Year: ~150–200 eggs (moderate layer).

  • Egg Size: Small to medium.

  • Egg Color: White.

  • Broodiness: Rarely broody; not reliable for hatching their own eggs.

🌿 Temperament

  • Gentle, friendly, and curious.

  • Can be nervous or skittish due to limited vision from their crest.

  • Do well as pets and are popular in exhibitions.

  • Roosters are generally less aggressive compared to other breeds.

🏡 Care & Environment

  • Climate: Adaptable, but crest feathers can get wet easily and may cause discomfort or even frostbite in cold, damp weather.

  • Housing: Coop should be dry and well-ventilated; perches and nest boxes at accessible heights since vision issues can make them clumsy.

  • Free Range: They can free range but are more vulnerable to predators since their crest blocks vision—safer in secure runs.
