Silkie Chicken

Appearance

  • Size: Bantam-sized in most countries, though some standards recognize large fowl Silkies.

  • Weight:

    • Rooster: ~1.0–1.4 kg (2–3 lbs)

    • Hen: ~0.9–1.3 kg (1.5–2.5 lbs)

  • Body: Small, rounded, with soft fluffy plumage.

  • Unique Features:

    • Feathers feel like silk or fur (lack barbicels, so feathers don’t hook together).

    • Crest ("pom-pom") of feathers on the head.

    • Dark blue/black skin, bones, and meat (fibromelanosis).

    • Five toes on each foot (most chickens have four).

    • Walnut-shaped comb (usually dark purple to black).

  • Colors: Black, white, blue, buff, gray, partridge, splash.


🥚 Egg Production

  • Eggs per Year: ~100–150 eggs.

  • Egg Size: Small.

  • Egg Color: Cream to light brown.

  • Broodiness: Extremely broody—considered one of the best natural mothers for hatching eggs of their own or other breeds/species.


🌿 Temperament

  • Exceptionally gentle, friendly, and calm.

  • Easily handled, great for children and families.

  • Roosters are generally less aggressive than many other breeds.

  • Very social, do well in small flocks and as pets.
