Congo African Grey

Appearance

  • Size: 33–40 cm (13–16 in) long.

  • Wingspan: ~46–52 cm (18–20 in).

  • Weight: 400–600 g (0.9–1.3 lbs).

  • Plumage:

    • Light to medium grey body.

    • Scalloped feather edges, giving a textured look.

    • Bright red tail feathers (distinguishes them from Timneh African Greys, which have maroon tails).

  • Beak: Black, hooked.

  • Eyes: Pale yellow (adults), dark grey/black (juveniles).

  • Sexual Dimorphism: None visible; DNA testing required.


🥚 Breeding & Lifespan

  • Clutch Size: 2–5 eggs.

  • Incubation: ~28–30 days (female incubates, male provides food).

  • Fledging: 10–12 weeks.

  • Breeding Season: Varies by region (usually dry season).

  • Lifespan: 40–50 years in captivity (some over 60 with excellent care); 20–30 years in wild.


🌿 Behavior & Temperament

  • Extremely intelligent—often compared to a 3–5-year-old child in problem-solving ability.

  • Known as the best mimics in the parrot world; can learn hundreds of words and phrases.

  • Cautious and sometimes shy; bond strongly with one person.

  • Require social interaction—if neglected, can develop stress behaviors (screaming, feather plucking).

  • Not naturally cuddly but enjoy interaction, training, and mental challenges.


🏡 Care & Environment (Captivity)

  • Housing: Large, sturdy cage (minimum 36" x 28" x 48" for one bird). They need space to spread wings and climb.

  • Diet:

    • High-quality pellets (base diet).

    • Fresh vegetables (leafy greens, carrots, broccoli, corn, peppers).

    • Fruits (apple, papaya, mango, berries).

    • Limited nuts/seeds as treats.

  • Enrichment: Puzzle toys, foraging activities, speech training, climbing opportunities.

  • Social Needs: Daily interaction with humans; best for owners who spend several hours with them daily.
