Appearance

  • Plumage:

    • Bright green body.

    • Yellow patch on crown (varies in size).

    • Red on bend of wings (visible in flight).

    • Some blue on flight feathers and tail.

  • Beak: Grey/black, strong and curved.

  • Eyes: Orange or red iris (adult), dark brown in juveniles.

  • Sexual Dimorphism: None—males and females look the same. DNA sexing required.


🥚 Breeding & Lifespan

  • Clutch Size: 2–4 eggs.

  • Incubation: ~26–28 days (female incubates, male provides food).

  • Fledging: ~8–10 weeks.

  • Breeding Season: Spring to summer, depending on region.

  • Lifespan: 40–60 years in captivity (sometimes longer), 20–30 years in the wild.


🌿 Behavior & Temperament

🏡 Care & Environment (Captivity)

  • Housing: Large cage (minimum 36" x 28" x 48"), plus daily out-of-cage playtime. They thrive in an aviary or large bird room.

  • Diet:

    • High-quality formulated pellets (base).

    • Fresh vegetables: leafy greens, carrots, broccoli, peppers, corn.

    • Fruits: apple, papaya, mango, berries (in moderation due to sugar).

    • Limited nuts/seeds as treats.

  • Enrichment: Puzzle toys, climbing ropes, chewable wood.

  • Training: Benefit from positive reinforcement training; can learn words, tricks, and behaviors.
