Blue Fronted Amazon

 

Appearance

  • Size: 34–38 cm (13–15 in)

  • Weight: 350–550 g (0.8–1.2 lbs)

  • Plumage:

    • Green body overall.

    • Bright blue patch on forehead (name-giving feature).

    • Yellow on face, throat, and crown (amount varies).

    • Red at bend of wing and occasionally in flight feathers.

    • Blue primaries and tail tips.

  • Beak: Grey to black, strong and hooked.

  • Eyes: Orange-red in adults, dark brown in juveniles.

  • Sexual Dimorphism: None—males and females look alike (DNA sexing needed).


🥚 Breeding & Lifespan

  • Clutch Size: 3–4 eggs.

  • Incubation: ~26–28 days (female incubates).

  • Fledging: 8–10 weeks.

  • Breeding Season: Spring to early summer (depending on region).

  • Lifespan: 40–60 years in captivity; some reported up to 70+.


🌿 Behavior & Temperament

  • Highly intelligent and social.

  • Known for excellent talking ability—clear speech and large vocabularies.

  • Playful, curious, and clownish personality.

  • Can be loud, especially at dawn and dusk.

  • May show hormonal aggression during breeding season.

  • Need daily mental stimulation and interaction to prevent boredom.


🏡 Care & Environment (Captivity)

  • Housing: Large cage (minimum 36" x 28" x 48"); aviary or free-flight room preferred.

  • Diet:

    • High-quality pellets (main base).

    • Fresh vegetables: leafy greens, carrots, broccoli, peppers, corn.

    • Fruits: apple, papaya, mango, berries (in moderation).

    • Occasional nuts and seeds as treats.

  • Enrichment: Puzzle toys, foraging games, chewable wood, climbing ropes.

  • Training: Excellent learners; thrive with positive reinforcement.
