Blue And Gold Macaw

Appearance

  • Size: 76–86 cm (30–34 in) long, including tail.

  • Weight: 0.9–1.5 kg (2–3.5 lbs).

  • Plumage:

    • Bright turquoise-blue wings, back, and tail.

    • Golden-yellow chest and underparts.

    • Green forehead blending into blue crown.

    • Bare white facial patch with fine black feather lines.

  • Beak: Large, black, and hooked—very powerful.

  • Eyes: Pale yellow in adults, dark in juveniles.

  • Sexual Dimorphism: None—males and females look alike.


🥚 Breeding & Lifespan

  • Clutch Size: 2–3 eggs.

  • Incubation: ~24–28 days (female incubates).

  • Fledging: 3–4 months.

  • Breeding Season: Varies by region (often spring/summer).

  • Lifespan: 40–50 years average; up to 70+ years in captivity with excellent care.


🌿 Behavior & Temperament

  • Intelligent, playful, and affectionate.

  • Strong bond with human companions; can be “velcro birds.”

  • Excellent mimics—can learn words, phrases, and even sounds.

  • Can be loud—produce powerful screeches, especially at dawn and dusk.

  • Require daily mental and physical stimulation; otherwise may develop destructive behaviors.

  • Social and clownish—often enjoy performing tricks and showing off.


🏡 Care & Environment (Captivity)

  • Housing: Very large cage (minimum 60" x 48" x 60") or aviary; need plenty of space to climb and spread wings.

  • Diet:

    • High-quality pellets (base).

    • Fresh vegetables: leafy greens, peppers, carrots, corn, sweet potato.

    • Fruits: apple, papaya, mango, berries (moderation).

    • Nuts: walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts (treats).

  • Enrichment: Foraging toys, climbing ropes, chewable wood, puzzle feeders.

  • Training: Thrive on positive reinforcement—can learn tricks, recall, and talking.
