  • Common name: Hypo Leopard Gecko (Hypo = “Hypomelanistic”)

  • Scientific name: Eublepharis macularius

  • Origin of species: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Iran (arid rocky regions)

  • Size: 7–10 inches (average adult)

  • Weight: 45–70 g (females lighter, males heavier)

  • Lifespan: 15–20 years in captivity


🧬 What “Hypo” Means

  • Hypomelanistic = reduced black pigment.

  • A Hypo Leopard Gecko has fewer than 10 black body spots (excluding the tail and head).

  • If it has no black spots at all, it’s called a Super Hypo.

  • Can appear yellow to tangerine-orange, with cleaner, brighter coloration than normal morphs.


🧠 Temperament

  • Personality: Docile, calm, easy to handle — one of the most beginner-friendly reptiles

  • Handling: Tolerates regular gentle handling once acclimated

  • Behavior: Ground-dwelling, crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), enjoys hiding and exploring at night


🏡 Habitat & Care (in captivity)

  • Enclosure: 20-gallon long tank minimum for one adult; bigger is better

  • Substrate: Paper towel, reptile carpet, tile, or packed soil mix (avoid loose sand for young geckos — risk of impaction)

  • Temperature:

    • Warm side: 88–92°F (belly heat preferred via heat mat)

    • Cool side: 75–80°F

    • Night: ~70–75°F

  • Humidity: Low (30–40%), but provide a humid hide with damp moss for shedding

  • Lighting: Not UVB-dependent but low UVB can improve health long-term


🍴 Diet

  • Type: Insectivore

  • Staple foods: Crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae

  • Treats: Mealworms, hornworms, silkworms, waxworms (fatty, occasional only)

  • Supplements: Calcium + D3 dusting, multivitamins weekly

  • Feeding frequency:

    • Juveniles: daily

    • Adults: every 2–3 days
