  • Scientific name: Correlophus ciliatus (formerly Rhacodactylus ciliatus)

  • Origin: New Caledonia (South Pacific islands)

  • Size: 7–9 inches (including tail)

  • Weight: 35–45 g average adult

  • Lifespan: 15–20 years in captivity


🧬 Appearance

  • Body: Slender, with a prehensile tail (used for climbing and balance)

  • Distinctive feature: “Crests” or fringes running from the eyes down the back — often called eyelashes

  • Color/morphs: Wide variety — flame, harlequin, dalmatian, pinstripe, lily white, and more

  • Skin: Soft, velvety, and can change shade depending on mood, humidity, and environment


🧠 Temperament

  • Personality: Generally calm and curious, great for beginners

  • Handling: Tolerates gentle handling, though some may “jump” between surfaces (known as the “frog butt leap”)

  • Behavior: Arboreal (tree-dwelling), nocturnal, more active at night


🏡 Habitat & Care (in captivity)

  • Enclosure: Vertical tank (minimum 18x18x24 inches for one adult; larger if keeping multiples)

  • Substrate: Coconut fiber, soil, moss, or bioactive setups with live plants

  • Temperature:

    • Day: 72–78°F

    • Night: 65–72°F

    • Avoid >82°F (can cause stress/death)

  • Humidity: 60–80% (daily misting required, they drink water droplets)

  • Lighting: Not UVB-required but beneficial — low-level UVB helps long-term health

  • Decor: Lots of branches, vines, and hides for climbing and security


🍴 Diet

  • Type: Omnivore

  • Commercial diet: Special powdered Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) is the staple — provides complete nutrition when mixed with water

  • Insects (optional supplement): Crickets, dubia roaches, or silkworms (2–3x a week)

  • Fruits (treats): Mashed mango, banana, or papaya — not necessary if using CGD

  • Feeding schedule: Adults ~3x per week, juveniles daily
